A study was recently released from WalletHub showing Illinoisans are paying more in taxes on gas, real estate and state and local taxes than nearly any other state in the nation.

We have the dubious honor of having the second-highest real estate taxes in the country.  Illinoisans are paying nearly double in taxes at the gas pump at a time when middle-class Americans are just getting back on their feet from the pandemic.  And the finale in this disreputable trifecta is the rate at which Illinoisans are taxed at the state and local level.  WalletHub reports it is nearly 39 percent higher than the U.S. average.

Who did this to us? The current Democratic politicians in Washington and Springfield who have voted to spend money they do not have locally, raise taxes everywhere, and increase our national debt at the federal level that is fueling unprecedented inflation.

In November, voters will have a chance to send a Republican Governor to Springfield to stop Democrats from taxing residents and businesses out of Illinois.  It is the first step in a two-step process to gain control of our state government and reduce the tax burden, not increase it.

In Washington, my opponents, Congressman Sean Casten and Congresswoman Marie Newman are battling over who can become the Democratic nominee of the left progressive liberal wing in the November General election.

Do we really want to give either of them another term to continue raising taxes on the poor and middle-class residents of the 6th Congressional District? I say no, and that’s just one of the reasons why I am in this race.

I’m running for Congress to bring the voice of reason and respect back to Washington.  I have a proven track record of fiscal responsibility and reducing debt in government.

We need a congressperson who isn’t under an ethics investigation and who will work for ordinary citizens and not embrace the policies of Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi.

We need to hold our representatives in Washington accountable for the reckless spending policies that are forcing Illinoisans to pay more in taxes.  That is why I need your help to become the Republican nominee this November.

It is time to send the Democrats a message that enough is enough and elect a true Republican this November.  I hope I can count on your support.

Vote for Republican Gary Grasso on June 28th.

I wholeheartedly support Ukraine and its people in their fight to stay free from Putin’s unprovoked invasion. Putin has proven he is a thug who has earned and deserves our scorn. He is killing innocents including children and destroying a country without justification. We must resolve to fight and reject Putin.

The United Nations should do more than pass resolutions that Putin simply spurns. It should consider deploying a peace keeping force to assure that refugees and citizens are protected and provided safe passage if they choose to flee the possible coming tyranny.

As a precursor to establishing the United Nations in 1946, many of the founding nations met in London in 1941 during WWII to issue what became the Declaration of St. James Palace which contained this core principle: “That the only true basis of enduring peace is the willing co-operation of free peoples in a world in which, relieved of the menace of aggression, all may enjoy economic and social security; and that it is their intention to work together, and with other free peoples, both in war and peace to this end.”

Soviet Ukraine and the Soviet Union were among the many original members of the United Nations, a term coined by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, which was founded upon a statement from the leaders of the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union at the Yalta Conference in February 1945: “We are resolved,” the three leaders declared, “upon the earliest possible establishment with our Allies of a general international organization to maintain peace and security….”  Not only has Putin disregarded what is right and decent by ordering the invasion of Ukraine, he has thrown away and smeared the role Russians played in establishing the United Nations by doing exactly what the United Nations is chartered to reject.

Ukraine and its brave people deserve your wholehearted support in their fight to stay free from Putin and his unprovoked invasion. Let us be a beacon, like Lady Liberty, for all people and light-up and show all that is wrong about Putin.  He deserves the scorn of the world for killing and permanently injuring innocents, including children, and destroying a country without justification.    We must resolve to fight and reject Putin and all he represents.

GARY GRASSO
March 5, 2022

On Monday, March 7th, I officially filed the necessary documents and petitions to run for Congress in the 6th Congressional District in the June Primary. I want to personally thank the many volunteers across the district who circulated my petitions. For all those who signed a petition, let me tell you a little about myself.

I have truly lived the American Dream thanks to my parents who instilled in me the importance of getting an education so I can support myself and a family. My father worked for our suburban New York village in the sanitation department and held a second job. With only a sixth-grade education, Dad persevered to become a full-time firefighter by age 39. My mother was fostered to many homes and did not know her father. She worked as a waitress and a secretary before eventually earning a position as a courtroom clerk. She was very proud of that job.  Their struggles and determination inspired me to attend Georgetown University in Washington DC where I worked for my congressman, and later earned my law degree at Fordham University Law School at night.

So, why am I running for Congress? Here’s why: Washington has stopped listening to us or getting anything meaningful accomplished. We need to bring the voices of everyday families along with our values back to Washington so we can restore the American Dream for all of us. And we need to do it with respect for all viewpoints. Isn’t that something we all want and deserve?

I cannot serve in Washington without your support in the June primary so over the coming months I will be out in neighborhoods and at events to personally ask for your vote. Allow me the chance to bring our shared values and successes to Washington DC.

Respectfully,

Gary Grasso

Webb: “…, I can think of no one else, and I mean no one else that I would rather endorse for the privilege of serving in the United States Congress than Gary Grasso.”

Burr Ridge, IL (Feb. 15, 2022) — Burr Ridge Mayor and Candidate for the 6th Congressional District, Gary Grasso, announced today the endorsements of three major leaders in the Republican Party in his quest to be the nominee in the November General Election against the winner of the Democratic Primary in June.

The new 6th Congressional District is almost equally divided between Southwestern Cook and Southeastern DuPage Counties.  Burr Ridge is approximately equally divided between DuPage and Cook Counties in the District.

Grasso began the virtual press conference by speaking about his accomplishments as mayor and as a former DuPage County Board member and then proceeded to introduce each of the individuals endorsing his candidacy.

“I have been elected four times as Mayor of Burr Ridge since 2005 and led the development with the help of many others, of our award-winning Village Center, built our state-of-the-art police center in 2010, provided a fitting memorial to honor our veterans, and brought significant business including Loyola Medical to our community,” stated Grasso.  “I have also served southwestern DuPage as an elected member of the DuPage County Board between 2012 and 2018.  During that time, I was Chairman of the DuPage 911 Board and oversaw the construction of two call centers providing DuPage County with the finest 911 system in the state. In addition, I served 12 years on the DuPage County Board of Health” added Grasso.

Former United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois Dan Webb, House Republican Leader in the Illinois General Assembly Jim Durkin, and DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin each endorsed Grasso and attested by video their individual reasons for the endorsements.

“As someone who has spent years protecting individuals by prosecuting those who have refused to abide by the law, I can think of no one else, and I mean no one else that I would rather endorse for the privilege of serving in the United States Congress than Gary Grasso,” explained Webb who most recently served as Special Prosecutor in the high profile Jussie Smollett case.

“I live in Burr Ridge which is in the district and for 15 years I have personally witnessed with firsthand knowledge the kind of extraordinary leadership and dedication that Gary has provided to our community.”

Durkin, who serves as State Representative for Burr Ridge, spoke about the importance of having a candidate with a reputation for fiscal responsibility. “We need strong fiscal leadership in Washington to stop the out-of-control spending that threatens our children and grandchildren of their legacy for the American Dream.  I am voting for Gary Grasso and ask that you do the same.”

Cronin reflected on his time working with Grasso on the DuPage County Board citing Grasso’s leadership in Burr Ridge as well. “I have come to know and work with Gary Grasso as a Mayor of Burr Ridge and as a member of the DuPage County Board for six years.  I enthusiastically endorse Gary Grasso from the new Illinois 6th District,” Cronin stated. “I’ve also known Gary as a Mayor of Burr Ridge. Gary’s leadership has transformed Burr Ridge into a leading community serving residents in DuPage and Cook Counties with fiscal responsibility, something we desperately need in Washington.”

Grasso thanked the three leaders for their support. “It takes courage to take a stand and get behind a candidate for public office.  I am honored and humbled that these three individuals have selected me as their choice for the 6th Congressional District.”

Copies of each of the videos and transcripts is available on the Grasso for Congress website.

Good morning, thank you for attending this virtual press conference. I will give you some brief opening remarks about my candidacy for Congress, introduce three significant endorsements, and take your questions.

The new 6th Congressional District is comprised of municipalities in Southwestern Cook and Southeastern DuPage Counties. Burr Ridge sits almost equally between DuPage and Cook Counties in the District. That geography and my experience make me the perfect candidate to represent the citizens of the new IL 6th.

I was first elected Mayor in 2005, reelected in 2009 and then returned as mayor in 2019. I was elected for a fourth time in 2021. In my first two terms – with the help of many others – I led the development of:

our award-winning Village Center,
built our state-of-the-art police facility in 2010,
provided a fitting memorial to honor our veterans,
and brought significant businesses – including Loyola Medical- to Burr Ridge.
The COVID Pandemic hit just as I returned as Mayor in 2019. In the throes of the pandemic, we kept our small businesses and restaurants open using social distancing, spacing tables, and asking staff members to wear masks. We also provided funds for outdoor tents, and we also provided grants to our small businesses for them to meet payroll and rent. We did not lose one restaurant and only one business closed.

Burr Ridge is also fiscally sound and this past December 2021, we paid off our bond debt – Burr Ridge is debt free. How many municipalities can make that statement!!!

My public service also includes representing the residents of southeastern DuPage as an elected member to the DuPage County Board between 2012 and 2018. Many of these same residents and communities are now part of the IL 6th District.

During my time on the DuPage County Board, I was Chairman of the DuPage 911 Board and oversaw the construction of two state of the art call centers providing DuPage County – in my opinion and many others – with the finest 911 System in the state.

From 1998 to 2010, I served 12 years on the DuPage County Board of Health. We transformed the Health Board in those years to face bird flu, SARS, and West Nile virus giving me invaluable experience once the COVID pandemic struck.

Before moving to Burr Ridge in 1995, 27 years ago, my wife Janet and I lived in Western Springs in Cook County, now part of the new 6th District. There, I served on the Library Board for 4 years, and was elected to the St. John of the Cross School Board and then its Parish Council.

In 2018, along with other local officials, we brought to light the failures of the US and IL EPA concerning Sterigenics that eventually led to its closure and decommissioning. We support residents that are pursuing breast cancer and related lawsuits against Sterigenics. Burr Ridge also has filed claims against the USEPA to recover our legal fees.

I am an attorney by profession practicing law in the courthouses of Cook and DuPage Counties for over 40 years. I was the first in my family to get a college education graduating from Georgetown University in Washington DC and later earning my law degree from Fordham Law School – attending at night while working a full-time job.

My wife and I have raised six children in Cook and DuPage Counties and on Feb 10 last week we welcomed the birth of our sixth grandchild. Six children, six grandchildren, running for Congress in the 6th District – it has a ring to it…. Doesn’t it!

I have been asked why I am running for Congress. Here’s why:   We need to bring the voice of reason and respect for each other back to Washington. The perpetual partisan fighting and gridlock in Washington is hurting families and individuals across my community, the 6th District, this State, and nation. We have to stop the bickering, divisiveness, and name calling, and instead, make government work once again for the citizens of this great Country.

Look, I truly believe I have the best chance to win the district in the general election this November. That’s the prize.

I am honestly the candidate with the greatest experience and qualifications, with a proven track record of success in each of the positions I have held. Most importantly, I have a strong reputation and history of building consensus to get things done.

For example – as Mayor for over 10 years, I have been able to build consensus amongst my Board members on issues so that I never had to vote on a substantive matter to break a tie.

I can give Republicans north of I-80 a seat at the table of our national government – and bring the voice of reason to Washington.

Now I’d like to turn to today’s endorsements from three great leaders in their own right. I am honored and humbled that these individuals have selected me as their choice for Congress from the 6th District.

I will introduce them each separately so they may each articulate their reasons for endorsing me.

The first person is Dan Webb, former US Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and special prosecutor of the Jussie Smollett case. Dan is a true legal giant of our state and nation, and with whom I’ve also had the pleasure and honor to work with as an attorney.

The next video is from Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin. Leader Durkin also represents many of the residents of the new IL 6th District, including Burr Ridge. Jim is a tireless fighter for our communities in the Illinois General Assembly.

Our final video is from Dan Cronin, DuPage County Board Chairman, and former Chairman of the DuPage County Republican Organization. Dan appointed me Chairman of DuPage County’s 911 Board in 2014 and supported our efforts to build the most efficient 911 System in the state. Like me, Dan tries to work with others to build consensus.

I want to thank former US Attorney Dan Webb, House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, and DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin for those kind words on my behalf. I truly appreciate their endorsements. At this time… I will take questions.

Hi, I’m Dan Cronin, Chairman of the DuPage County Board and former Chairman of the DuPage County Republican Organization. I have come to know and work with Gary Grasso as a Mayor of Burr Ridge and as a Member of the DuPage County Board for six years. I enthusiastically endorse Gary Grasso for Congress from the new Illinois 6th District. Here’s why:

In 2014, while he was a County Board Member, I appointed Gary as Chairman of DuPage’s 911 Board. The DuPage 911 Board is the largest single 911 service area in the State of Illinois – responsible for providing emergency police and fire services to almost 1 million residents. Gary was Chairman of the 911 Board from 2014 to 2018.

During those 4 years he oversaw the building of not one – but two – state-of-the-art call centers – that today quickly direct our first responders to emergencies throughout DuPage County.

For one of those call centers, Gary also repurposed and refurbished an unused building which now brings in over $600,000 annually in rent to the County budget.

I have also known Gary as Mayor of Burr Ridge. Gary’s leadership has transformed Burr Ridge into a leading community serving residents in DuPage and Cook Counties with fiscal responsibility…something we desperately need in Washington.

Gary oversaw the building of its Village Center in Cook County and has been a leader in consolidation of government… something I, too, have championed in Illinois. Gary served as President of the DuPage Mayors & Managers Association and also served 12 years on the DuPage Board of Health. Most recently, he was a regional leader in the fight against COVID, keeping businesses and restaurants open and protecting small businesses.

Gary will bring his skills and record of accomplishments to Washington D.C. and represent all of us – not just the special interests. Gary knows how to get things done for you.

I endorse Gary Grasso for Congress in the Illinois 6th District and ask you to give him your vote so together, we can make Washington work for all of us once again.

Hello, this is Dan Webb.  I am the former United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois that includes Chicago and the surrounding collar counties. I also have recently been the court appointed special prosecutor in the Jessie Smollet case.  As someone who has spent years protecting individuals by prosecuting those who refuse to abide by the law, I can think of no one else I would rather endorse for the privilege of serving in the United States Congress than Gary Grasso.

Gary is running for Congress in the new IL 6th District.  I live in the Burr Ridge, which is in the District, for 15 years and have witnessed firsthand the kind of extraordinary leadership and dedication Gary has provided to our community.

I have also known and worked with Gary as an attorney, litigator and a friend.  and let me tell you this- He has earned the designation of being an Illinois Leading Lawyer on three separate occasions.

I am convinced Gary understands that government’s first responsibility is to keep people and property safe.  Gary has made police services and protecting Our community a top priority.  And what is very important is that Gary is a consensus builder and is committed to working with others to solve problems – which is something that is desperately needed in government today.  We need more individuals such as Gary in Washington to get things done – to break the gridlock.  You can count on Gary to do just that for all of us in Washington.

So I support and wholeheartedly endorse Gary Grasso for Congress in the new 6th District of Illinois.  I am now asking you to do the same and vote for Gary in the Republican primary in June.

Thank you.

Hello, this is House Republican Leader Jim Durkin.  I am proud to endorse my friend and Mayor of Burr Ridge Gary Grasso for Congress in the new Illinois 6th District.

The 6th District includes much of southwestern Cook and southeastern DuPage County.  I too serve Burr Ridge as part of my House District and I have personally known and worked with Gary.  We need strong fiscal leadership in Washington to stop the out of control spending that threatens our children and grandchildren of their legacy for the American Dream.

I also know something about the single greatest concern in IL – public safety.  I am an attorney and former prosecutor.  Gary will stand up for victims of crime and our first responders in Congress.

I’m voting for Gary Grasso for Congress and ask you to do the same.
